Leadership Expert, Author and Chairman of the Afghanistan Trust
Stuart Tootal was awarded the DSO for outstanding leadership when he took 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment (3 PARA) into Helmand. They were the first unit into the area, facing the complete unknown in one of the world’s harshest environments and an historically unfavourable fighting arena.
Commissioned into the Queen’s Own Highlanders in 1988, Stuart completed several tours of Northern Ireland during the ‘Troubles’. He saw active service in the 1991 Gulf War and during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. He has served in the MOD’s strategic plans department and worked for the Chief of the General Staff, as a personal military assistant for which he was awarded the OBE in 2005.
He was selected to command the 3 Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (3 PARA) in 2005. This included commanding the first UK Battle Group to be sent to Helmand Province in Southern Afghanistan in 2006, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his ‘outstanding leadership of 1,200 men and women during demanding combat operations.
Following promotion to full Colonel in 2007, he surprised many by giving up a highly successful career and resigning from the Army over the issue of the poor treatment of his wounded and equipment shortages.
Stuart joined Barclays in 2008 as the Chief Security Officer of their Global Retail and Commercial Bank in 2008. In 2010 he set up the Barclays Armed Forces Transition Resettlement and Employment programme, which is an industry leading multimillion project that seeks to help wounded service personnel find employment on medical discharge from the military.
He is also a respected media defence and security commentator and lectures on leadership in complex environments, with a particular emphasis of exploring the leadership ‘transferables’ from his military experience to the commercial world.
He is Chairman of the Parachute Regiment’s Afghanistan Trust charity for wounded paratroopers, which he set up in 2009. Stuart is also author of the Sunday Times best seller -‘Danger Close – Leading 3 PARA in Afghanistan’. His second book, ‘The Manner of Men – 9 PARA’s Heroic D-Day Mission’, is published by John Murray in May 2013.

What the audience can expect
Stuart will offer the audience the opportunity to learn from his experiences as a leader. Stuart, unlike many others, understands that Military Leadership does not always transfer to the civilain, or commercial world. His main advantage is that he can translate his many years of Military Leadership into the Commercial Reality of today’s marketplace due to his recent experience as a senior leader in a major financial institution. This transferance of skills is the true gem in Stuart’s presentation and it is not one to be missed. Stuart uses anecdotes and photographs and also, where possible, video clips and sound. Using dramatic audio-visual media, he builds on a candid and self-effacing portrayal of his experiences to focus on leadership, planning and decision making, team building and succeeding in challenging environments by placing an emphasis on the importance of organisational culture and ethos. His motivational presentation resonates with corporate audiences, as he draws on parallels with his contemporary experience as an MD in a leading blue chip company, which brings a battlefield to the boardroom perspective to his talks.
Presentation Approach
Engaging and often humorous, Stuart’s approach is always “audience-centric”. His dynamism and experience is only matched by his humility and understanding of the audience’s needs. A superb speaker.
Thank you for a truly excellent evening last night. You were erudite, concise, fascinating and inspirational by turn. …….We came away much moved and deeply inspired.
I felt compelled to write – as I’m sure many continue to do – after listening to your talk at the RGS last night. In short, it was excellent. You presented what was a very involved and intricate military (and political) experience with great honesty, eloquence, humility, passion and engaging clarity. …..I can understand why General Mike Jackson tried to persuade you to stay in the military.
You were simply brilliant! I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed your talk this evening; it was fascinating, absorbing, insightful and compelling. And as always, your narrative was fabulous
Just to say fantastic talk and quite all encompassing – My boss and his wife thought you were just amazing and what a brilliant speaker.
